3 Resources To Help You Study Your Bible
"I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word." Psalm 119:15-16
The Bible is our most treasured book as a Christian. The Lord's truths, promises, love letters and more are located in its contents. I am learning more than ever as a mama to little's & as a wife that I need to fill my mind with truth DAILY. It is IMPOSSIBLE on my own to be a good mother or wife or friend and so on... but with the Holy Spirit working through me I can! Without this truth marinating my heart, I fall back to selfish ways, forget what it looks like to follow Christ and who He made me to be & forget to live with gospel intention. Even on the days I am in the Word I still fall so short & always will BUT Praise God we serve a Savior of unmerited GRACE.
I use various ways to study my Bible in different seasons of life. I don't personally think there is one "correct" way & I know there are PLENTY more than what I am sharing with you here. I wanted to share just three with you that help me to study my Bible a little better on the daily in a season where I have a 4 month old, a 2 year old & just trying to survive :)
3 Resources To Help You Study Your Bible:
1. She Reads Truth Study Bible
My friend Danielle told me about this one. I am a lover of all things beautiful & helpful...this is just that! It has gorgeous prints of scripture, large margins on the side for notes, helpful introductions at the beginning of each book to lay down a good foundation of context before I jump into scripture, interwoven devotions... it's got it all! It has a wonderfully written introduction that walks you through how to study your Bible. The books are color coded by genre to help you locate them easily & to know how to approach that genre appropriately. There are reading plans, maps, charts & timelines. So many wonderful resources all in one! Find yours here.
It's exactly what it sounds like. A journal and Bible in one! My Pastor's wife, Michelle recommended these a while back and when I finally bit the bullet and got one I fell in love! These are journals where you write the scriptures down on the right side of the page and take notes on those scriptures on the left. The Jourible I am currently finishing up covers Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians. There are hints on the left side of the notes/journal section to help you dive deeper into certain scriptures. I use this in tandem with the She Reads Truth Bible & sometimes the ESV Study Bible to take more in depth notes. I learn best when I write things out. This helps me to sit on scripture a bit longer & learn it in its entirety rather than what I usually do when I just read it alone. I also thought this would be a neat keepsake for my children one day, the entire Bible written out with my own personal notes...now that's something to not throw away! You can find Journible's here.
3. 'New Morning Mercies-A Daily Gospel Devotional'-Paul David Tripp
Now this isn't a formal Bible Study tool, but it is really helpful! My brother & sister-in-law gave this to Stephen and I last year and we really enjoy it. They are gospel centered, daily devotions & at the end of the devotion he gives you more scripture for further study. We aren't perfect at this, but try to read this at dinner time as a family. It's also a really great way to help me settle on some scripture to study if I am having a crazy day and my brain isn't working on all cylinders. You can find the book here!
You might be thinking, but WHEN do I have time to study my Bible? Well, that's a good question... you tell me. Christ needs to be at the forefront of all you do. If you aren't centering your life on Him and His word, you are going to struggle with the rest, so you've got to find some time! Don't think I've mastered this... I have definitely not arrived...BUT I do know the importance of consistent Spiritual Disciplines & the fruit that flows from my life when I am regularly in the Word. Not because I am being rewarded by trying harder... but because the Holy Spirit is continually changing my heart through my understanding and application of His Word.
So put that Bible app on audio mode while driving to work, or grab your coffee & open to SOMETHING even if kiddos are at your feet (give em' their own little Bible to read with you & turn on some worship music! Make it a family time with Jesus!) Just get in the Word! Hopefully these can be some tools that help you do so.
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." Deuteronomy 6:5-7
